Tired of watching from the sidelines? Looking for some aggression relief? Roller Derby just might work for you! The Alamo City Rollergirls are recruiting women ages 18 & up. We are looking for enthusiastic women who are ready to learn and posses a great attitude and ability to get along with a diverse group of women! If you can skate without hugging the wall, speed up, slow down and stop... then you can join our Asphalt Assault training program and be on your way to kicking ass in the 2009 season. If you're NOT the greatest at skating but still want to join, we encourage you to get out and skate as much as possible! Check out the session times for the Rollercade to begin your journey to derby. NOW, you're probably asking, "What do I need to do to join?" Well, you can come out to our New Skater Assessment Session the first Wednesday of every month at the Rollercade. You will have the full attention of recruiters, starting 30 min. earlier than regular session. Please be there at 7pm sharp with $5 to get in and $2 for skate rental if you don't have your own skates.
Once you've made it and you're really serious about joining, you will need to purchase your gear. You'll need skates of course! Please stay away from purchasing skates from Academy or other sporting goods stores because through personal experience, they WILL NOT LAST! You can get them from Rollercade, or there are numerous of websites that sell skates as well.
Also on your shopping list:
Helmet: Academy is fine, skateboard shops or online.
Wrist guards: Skateboard shops, Sun & Ski Sports, or again, online.
Elbow & Knee Pads: Same as Wrist Guards.
Mouth Piece: Any sporting goods store.
Outdoor Wheels: The Rollercade or online. (Suggestion: Stay away from the Sure-Grip Aerobics - they are not for roller derby.)
There are dues to pay to be a member of the league and you will also need to purchase skater insurance. There are attendance requirements and participation requirements that have been put in place for the success of the league.
